NERAASA, the Northeast Regional AA Service Assembly. Heard of it? It’s a big meeting where people from all over the Northeast get together to have a chat about how to make Alcoholics Anonymous better. It’s like a giant brainstorming session but for sober people, discussing all sorts of important stuff about recovery, unity, and service. You’ve got your GSRs, DCMs, and Intergroup reps – these are people who, I suppose, make the decisions that affect AA as a whole, or at least try to.
Throughout the weekend, there’s lots of talking. Panel presentations, floor discussions, and even a dinner where you can listen to a speaker. Then, just when you think it’s all over, there are Round Table Sharing Sessions – sounds fancy, doesn’t it? You’ll hear from people on topics like public information, cooperation with professionals (I assume they mean the non-drunk ones), and even dealing with treatment facilities. So if you’re into discussing things that matter to AA and feeling part of a bigger picture, this is the weekend for you. Just don’t expect a nice cuppa tea, I’m assuming.
Oh, and here’s the best part – there are 40 scholarships available to help people who can’t put their hands on enough money to attend like when you want to go but your wallet says “Nope, mate, not today.” But don’t dilly dally because they’re given out on a first come, first serve basis.
